Way to deal with pending defeat, Rob Ford: just run away.  This guy is unbelievable.  I marvel at his cowardice.  Just as a vote on LRT vs. subway is about to take place, a vote he knows he’s going to lose, he gets up and escapes to the nearest elevator. What kind of a mayor is this?  He was only putting off the inevitable as his subway plan was defeated today by City Council.  Oh wait, I forgot: Rob Ford said City Council is irrelevant.

I can’t help but feel a little bad for U.S. Staff Seargent Robert Bales.  Faced with 17 counts of murder for gunning down innocent civilians in Afghanistan, what do you suppose was going through this man’s mind when he went on his rampage?  The atrocities of war cannot be truly understood unless you’re in the middle of it, and even then, you likely can never come to understand it.  I can see how it could break the mental fortitude of even the toughest soldier, especially when it’s a battle with an unclear goal.  How could it not make you go crazy?  This is the price we pay for war, and both sides lose.

So Ontario is fighting with its elementary school teachers… again.  As a parent now, I do value the role of teachers.  Well, let’s face it: you don’t have to be a parent to really value them.  They are critical to the development of human beings – that is an enormous burden to carry.  So I think it’s important that they be fairly compensated.  But enough is enough.  In times of high unemployment and zero job security, how could they – in their right minds – say that things like banked sick days cannot be taken away and annual pay increases of 8% must be maintained?  News flash: nobody gets this, teachers, nor should you.  First of all, your union should focus on your base pay as a true measure of your worth – have some pride and fight instead for what you’re truly worth!  Secondly, you entered the profession knowing that your win was 2 months of vacation time in the summer.  The ability to take vacation days (or “mental health days”) throughout the school year is what you gave up to get this perk, so I don’t think you really deserve to bank sick days. There is not a private corporation in the country that wouldn’t laugh at the notion of giving its employees the right to banked sick days – it’s ridiculous!  Finally, your union also needs to revisit the notion of tenure and look at pay-for-performance.  To really prove to us how much you’re worth as a profession, you should focus on retaining the best.  You can’t deny that your union’s position on tenure has resulted in a lot of weeds in your garden.  You need some Round-Up.

And lastly, can I just say: I really don’t understand the obsession with Hunger Games.
